2011 Adult Weight Status: Key Findings

In 2011 health assessment identified that 71% of Lucas County adults were overweight or obese on Body Mass Index (BMI).


In 2010 30% of Ohio and 28% of U.S. adults were obese.

Over one-third (35%) of Lucas County adults were obese and the remaining 36% were overweight by the BMI. This puts them at an elevated risk for diseases and health problems. Person who are obese have medical cost that are $1,429 higher than those who are normal weight.


Lucas County adults gave the following reasons for not exercising:

Weather 23%
Cannot afford a gym membership 8%
Do not know what activity t
o do 6%
Safety concerns 5%
Doctors advise against 3%
Other reasons 13%

The CDC recommends that adults participate in moderate exercise for at least 2 hours and 30 minutes every week or vigorous exercise for at least 1 hour and 15 minutes every week.

Lucas County adults ate
at the following places 3 or more times in a typical week:
